Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.

Pentasa Slow Release Tablets (mesalamine) are an aminosalicylate anti-inflammatory drug used to treat mild to moderate inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Patients buy Pentasa Slow Release Tablets to send an active episode into remission and to help keep IBD in remission; treatment in both cases is very similar but dosage does differ. This product will not cure IBD, but helps minimize it.

Occasionally patients will buy Pentasa Slow Release Tablets to treat other, similar bowel disorders. The medication soothes inflamed tissue in the bowels, which in turn reduces pain and other symptoms, such as diarrhea, urgent need to evacuate, and so forth. The medication will not do much for conditions that are not inflammatory and/or not in the bowels.

Use of this product in children has not been studied, and should be avoided without doctor involvement. Use in pregnant or breastfeeding mothers can continue with doctor approval.

Taking Control of IBD

This product comes in tablets, which are actually a collection of microgranules held together with a tableting material. The microgranules are designed to make their way into the bowels, so it is important that they not be cut, chewed, crushed, or otherwise damaged. However, tablets may be dissolved in a glass of water, which will leave only the microgranules, which can then be swallowed without chewing.

Individuals who have difficulty swallowing tablets may not want to buy Pentasa Slow Release Tablets; the medication is also available in Pentasa granules, which can be swallowed without the need to dissolve a tablet every time.

Treatment varies a bit depending on whether treating an active episode or keeping the condition in remission.

To treat an active episode:

  • Take 4 g (4000 mg) once per day.
  • Alternatively, according to doctor instructions and/or patient response, dosage may be divided into 2 or 3 smaller doses taken throughout the day.
  • Benefits will be felt within a few days to 2 weeks of starting treatment.
  • Treatment should continue until the condition is in remission.

When in remission:

  • Take 2 g (2000 mg) once per day.
  • Treatment should continue for as long it provides benefit, assuming no adverse effects develop.

Pentasa Slow Release Tablets work well at keeping IBD in remission, but active episodes may still happen. When they do happen, the higher-dose treatment may be adopted until resolved. If still experiencing active episodes while taking Pentasa Slow Release Tablets, they should be less frequent, less severe, and easier to resolve than without the tablets.

Patients with IBD usually also benefit from modifying diet, avoiding certain foods that may aggravate the condition. A doctor can make recommendations, but many patients can largely figure out which foods are 'bad' on their own as well.

If no significant benefit is noticed after one month of treatment with Pentasa Slow Release Tablets, alternative products should be considered.

Before Buying Pentasa Slow Release Tablets

Some individuals are at increased risk of severe side effects and should not buy Pentasa Slow Release Tablets at all; namely those who are:

  • Allergic to aspirin or any other salicylates
  • Suffering severe kidney or liver issues

A very small percentage of patients not allergic to salicylates will experience an allergic reaction anyway. Though unlikely, patients should be aware of symptoms, which include developing hives, swelling of limbs, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, and rapid or erratic heartbeat. An allergic reaction warrants immediate medical attention.

The more common side effects associated with this medication are difficult to distinguish from symptoms of IBD itself, including diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal discomfort. These are not cause for concern unless severe or persistant.

Better Health Delivered to your Door

IBD is not a fun condition; afflicted patients often find it quite disruptive to their daily routine and unusual activities are often out of the question. Most patients who buy Pentasa Slow Release Tablets find the medication puts IBD into remission and keeps it there, so activities that once seemed intimidating can be undertaken with confidence.
